George W. Carrothers - excerpt from Hardesty's History of Monroe Co., OH, 1882, Unigraphic, Inc.

George W. Carrothers - is a native of Woodsfield, his birth having taken place there in April 19,1817. He was married at Woodsfield, May 17, 1838, to Mary Dye, whose birth-place was Washington county, Ohio, and the date May 7, 1816. The ceremony was performed by Henry Johnson, of Indian fame. He was one of the boys who killed the two Indians that kidnapped them. Their children are: Anna, born August 12, 1839, resides at home; Susanna, May 22, 1842, resides in Monroe county; James H., January 30, 1847, died July 26, 1847; Mary P., March 17, 1857; Abbie, September 22, 1859-the two last reside in Monroe county. Mr. Carrothers has served as sheriff of this county two terms; he has also served as deputy. The following history of Mr. Carrothers antecedents will prove of interest.

James Carrothers - excerpt from Hardesty's History of Monroe Co., OH, 1882, Unigraphic, Inc.

"The first court house was built by James Carrothers in 1816 and his contract was for $137.00 with the commissioners. The first court was held there in 1820."

"George W. Carrothers was born in Woodsfield April 19, 1817, the first child born there. He was the son of James Carrothers and Susannah Dye, dau. of Enoch Dye. James Carrothers died in 1846, his wife died in 1853. They had five daus. born before George W., and also a son Enoch D. Carrothers who was the youngest in the family. James and his wife are supposed to be buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Woodsfield, along with 4 of their daughters."

"Center Township - James Carrothers, an early settler, emigrated from Ireland as an infant in 1774 with his parents George and Isabella Carrothers, on board the "Mary" bound for Philadelphia. Soon after arrival, Isabella died, and George settled in Washington Co. Pa. and later married again. In 1814 James Carrothers purchased land in Monroe Co. Ohio, 1 mile west of Woodsfield. At the age of 30, he married Susannah Dye, daughter of Enoch Dye of Washington Co. Pa. On April 19, 1817, his son George W. Carrothers was born. There was also a son, Enoch D. Carrothers, two years younger than George W."

"James Carrothers died in 1846 and was buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Woodsfield. His wife died in 1853 and was buried there also. They had 4 daughters also buried there."
