Biographical Sketch - information taken from Newport and Vermillion Township The First 100 Years 1824-1924, by Harold L. O'Donnell, pg. 226

• Joel Dicken
  "This is one of the very first families to settle in Vermillion Township, coming here in 1821 from Prairie Creek, Kentucky. Several of their children were born in Kentucky before coming here.
  
  Joel's son, Simeon, was married in 1822 to Martha (Patsy) Elliott, a daughter of Robert Elliott and a sister of Mrs. Benjamin Shaw. Note that the date was 1822 which was two years before Vermillion County was formed, therefore the marriage was recorded in Vigo County of which this county was then a part. The Dickens, Elliott and Shaw families were apparently very close as many of their children had the same names.
  
  Joel entered land in Section 17, T 17 N R 9 W which was at that time part of Vermillion Township but which in 1856 was part of a mile wide strip running east and west which was given to Eugene Township. Also Joel and son Simeon entered land in Section 8 alongside Section 17, but which was in Eugene Township. Shaws and Elliotts were adjoining. Richard Dicken entered land in Section 28 just west of Newport.
  
  The 1840 Census of Vermillion Township shows James Dicken, but the 1850 Census shows only his widow age 35 and seven children and his name never appeared again. Either the Mexican War in 1847 or the California Gold Rush in '49 might account for this, or many other things. The youngest child was one year old so he could not have been gone very long. He was an early school teacher having taught at the old Custer school which stood west of the later Thomas School.
  
  Simeon had five sons in the Civil War which must be a record, at least locally. Four of these: Jerome, Robert, Joel and Benjamin S. were in Co. I of the 14th Ind. Regt. Jerome was killed at the Battle of Antietam. Andrew was in Co. K of the 6th Ind. Regt. Andrew died at the Soldiers Home in Danville, Illinois, in 1922 and is buried there.
  
  Jerome who was killed at Antietam was a carpenter and built a bridge over the Little Vermillion at Poplar Street in 1858.
  
  Benjamin S., another son of Simeon, had three wives but only one, Ellen Dillow, whom he married in 1878 has been identified.
  
  Benjamin K., 1821-1883, was an important man in Newport affairs and was County Commissioner from 1856-1861. He afterward moved to Alma, Wisconsin and spent the rest of his life there.
  
  This very early and once very large family has only three members listed in Vermillion County, Indiana, telephone directories. Roy lives south of Dana, and Jerry L. and Mrs. Beatrice Dicken in the Clinton area. Tere are six Dicken's in the Danville, Illinois, telephone directory, all members of this family and are descendants of Charles, son of Robert, son of Simeon, son of Joel according to Mr. Jerry L. Dicken who is a son of Clarence shown as a son of Charles.
  
  Florinda Dicken married Franklin Richardson, a brother of John Richardson well known citizen of Newport and moved to Georgetown, Illinois, and several descendants of other names are living there now."
