Biographical Sketch of Laurens Duyts - information
obtained from "Scandinavian Immigrants in New York 11630-1674" by John
O. Evjen, Ph.D., 1916
"Laurens Duyts came over to New Netherland in 1639 in the ship
'de Brant van Trogen.' Among his fellow passengers were the Danes
Captain Jochem Pietersen Kuyter, Jonas Bronck(?), and Pieter Andriesen.
Duyts and Andriesen were to work for Jonas Bronck: to clear a tract of
five hundred acres, which Bronck had purchased from the Indians.
Duyts thus became one of the pioneers of the present Borough of Bronx.
He was commonly known as Laurens Grootschoe (Big Shoe). He was born
in Holstein in 1610.
He married Ytie Jansen. By her he had three children:
a daughter, Margariet, who was baptized on December 23, 1639, the sponsors
being Gerrit Jansen of Oldenburg (perhaps he was Ytie's brother), Teuntje
Joris and Tyntje Martens; a son, Jan, who was baptized on March 23, 1641;
another son, Hans, who was baptized in 1644. Jochem Pietersen Kuyter
was sponsor at the baptism of the boys.
Duyts appears to have been farming in different places, leasing the lands
he tilled.
In March, 1654, he had a land dispute with Francoys Fyn. Fyn had
a certain parcel of land lying on Long Island over against Hog Island (now
Blackwell's Island). Duyts had sold this without Fyn's knowing it,
claiming it was his own land.
Duyts leased for some time the bowery of the Norwegian woman from Marstrand,
Anneke Jans. He was to pay her two hogs in rent. As he had
paid only one, he was sued, in May, 1658, by Anneke's son-in-law, Johannes
Pietersen Verbrugge, later mayor of New York, and was condemned to deliver
the hog to the plaintiff.
Duyt's moral life does not deserve mention. But in order to show
hos(sic) Laurens "Big Shoe" trampled upon the laws of decency and how such
a lawbreaker was punished, we relate that Laurens Duyts of Helstein received
a most severe sentence from Stuyvesant on November 25, 1658. For
selling his wife, Ytie Jansen, and forcing her to live in adultery with
another man and for living himself also in adultery, he was to have a 'rope
tied around his neck, and then to be severely flogged, to have is right
ear cut off, and to be banished for fifty years.'
Laurens died at Bergen, New Jersey, about 1668. His son, Hans, lived
at Harlem in 1667. Also the other son, Jan, lived there. 'He
bore a good name at Harlem, and did not deserve the taunt uttered one day
by Jeanne de Ruine, in presence of Mons Pietersen, a Swede or Finn: You
villain, run to your father Dane.' Pietersen claimed that Jan had
said nothing to provoke it. Jan married in 1667, again in 1673.
Hans had a daughter, Cathrine, who at the age of fourteen (1688) was married
to Joost Paulding from Holland. Paulding went to Westchester.
He was the ancestor of John Paulding, one of Major Andre's captors."

Died - on Friday, the 29th ult., Isaac Newton, son of John L. and Sarah Jane Dye,
aged 1 year, 9 months, 11 days.
"As vernal flowers that scent the morn,
But wither in the rising day,
Thus was this infant's lovely dawn-
Thus swiftly fled his life away.
He died before his infant soul
Had ever burned with wrong desires-
Had ever spurned at heaven's control,
Or ever quenched its sacred fires.
He died to sin, be died to care-
But for a moment felt the rod;
Then rising ont he viewless air,
Spread his light wings and soared to God.
And thus shall faith's consoling power
The tears of love restrain;
O who that saw thy parting hour,
Could wish thee back again.
Triumphant in thy closing eye,
The hope of glory shone;
Joy breathed in thy expiring sigh-
We felt the pang along."
-
January 13, 1849 Issue
Died - on Monday, the 8th inst., Sarah Jane DYE, wife of John DYE, aged 22 yrs.
and 3 months.
"How sweet the hour of closing day,
When all is peaceful and serene;
And when the sun with cloudless ray,
Sheds mellow lustre o'er the scene.
Such is this sister's parting hour-
So peacefully she sinks to rest
When faith, endued from Heaven with power,
Sustains and cheers her languid breast.
Mark but that patience of her eye
That smile upon her wasted cheek;
They tell us of her glory nigh,
In language that no tongue can speak.
A beam from Heaven is sent to cheer
The pilgrim on her gloomy road;
And angels are attneding near,
To bear her to their bright abode.
Who would not wish to die like those
Whom God's own spirit deigns to bless?
To sink into that soft repose-
Then wake to perfect happiness."

Dye Letters - the following extractions
are from letters written during the Civil War. These extractions
were published in the "Spirit of Democracy" (Woodsfield, OH) newspaper;
28 Jun 1973 issue; Family Research column written by Catherine Foreaker
Fedorchak. The actual letters were (at the time of the article) in
the possession of Mrs. George Kerr of North Canton, OH.

The following is an excerpt from a letter written 23 Aug 1862 from Camp
Marietta by Benjamin DYE to his brother, Elam:
"THE UNION NOW, HENCE FORTH AND FOREVER, AMEN."
"It is true that I won't make much money by going to war, I did not
volunteer for that purpose. But I think it my duty to fight for my
country, liberty, the union, and the constitution. If it was fighting
only for money, dollars wouldn't take me. If I keep my health, I
am willing to face the cannon balls for thirteen dollars a month for my
country and liberty." Also mentioned in the letter that Mathias Dye
was on a furlough for 30 days.
-
The following is an excerpt from a letter written 30 Nov 1863 from Sleepy
Creek, VA by Benjamin DYE to his wife, Martha:
"If God spares me to serve my three years out, and these rebels are
not put down, I will volunteer again. The stars and stripes must
float over every foot of territory wrested from our glorious Union by these
fiends who are starving our brave comrades in filthy prisons. However,
I have no doubt but that this war will end before my time is out.
A few more such moves as the Napoleon of the western hemisphere has made
on them at Chattanooga will bring them to their understanding."
Note: Benjamin DYE was captured
at Winchester, VA on 15 Jun 1863 and paroled at City Point, VA 02 Jul 1863.
He was recaptured 31 Aug 1863 at Bunker Hill, VA. When Benjamin was
wounded in battle his brother, Bazil, found him and moved him to a place
of safety.
-
A letter written by Sgt. James Stafford to Benjamin DYE states that Joshua
DYE (Benjamin's brother) took sick on Folly Island and was improving when
the company moved to Morris Island. However, he again took sick and
was removed to the Regiment Hospital and died. His effects, amounting
to $54.50 were sent to his mother, c/o John Way, Woodsfield.
-
The following is paraphrased from a letter written 27 Mar 1863 by Elam
DYE to his brother, Mahlon:
He reported that the 92nd Reg. was not in very good health, and mentioned
in particular Thomas Reeves from Antioch as having measles, also David
Piatt, son of Jacob Piatt. Reeves and Piatt were sick about 10 days,
before succumbing to the disease, and Elam writes that they were both buried
at Carthage (Tenn.) and that he helped to bury them. He also mentioned
that Wm. Foraker and Harvey Cline has measles, too, but had recovered.
Elam also mentioned that he had received a letter from Joshua Dye (his
brother) which had been sent from Hilton Head, SC. Elam asked that
letters be addressed to him at the camp, Carthage, Tenn. Co. C, 92nd
Reg. c/o Crooks Brigade.
Note: Elam DYE was killed in action
in Rable, West Virginia in 1863.
