From the "Name Boxes" in the Augusta Library Archives in Maine

What are the "Name Boxes"?

In the late 1700's town clerks were asked to record births, deaths and marriages. It is estimated that only about 20% of the clerks complied. These records, filed by surname, are referred to as the "name boxes."
