"Following nearly a year of ill health, and practially bedfast since June, Mrs. Mary A. Alford, 77 years old, passed away at her home in this city last Sunday evening. Mrs. Alford suffered a paralytic stroke several months ago, from which she appeared to rally for a time, but further attacks of the disease sapped her vitality until the end came gently Sunday evening.
Mary Adeline, daughter of Enoch and Adeline Carrothers was born Sept. 13, 1853 at Woodsfield, Ohio, and departed this life Sept. 28, 1930, at Greensburg, Kans.
Her youth was spent with her parents at Boynton and San Jose, Ill. At the latter place she completed her school work, and after having done work at the state normal, began to teach school, teaching for about eight years near San Jose.
In 1881, she came to Girard, Kas., and was there united in marriage on March 10, to Dr. John W. Alford, a practicing physician in that city. After four years at Girard, two years at Erie, and two on a farm near Chanute, Dr. and Mrs. Alford moved to Macksville, Kans., where he again took up the practice of medicine. Following 16 years residence at Macksville, they moved to Mullinville, Kans., where the doctor died in 1909. His friends remember him as a Civil War veteran, a capable physician and an outstanding citizen. Since her husband's death, Mrs. Alford had made her home at Mullinville and in Greensburg.
To Mr. and Mrs. Alford were born six children: Wayne C., Mullinville; Lina May, deceased; Malissa Isabelle (Mrs. E.M. Brown), Greensburg; John W., Ulysses; Sarah Emmeline, deceased; and Mary Angeline, Greensburg. There are seven grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. Belle Briggs(sic), Macksville, Kans., and Mrs. Eda Gault, Crowley, La., also mourn her departure. Besides these many other relatives join with the immediate family in their sorrow. Mother Alford will also be missed by a host of friends.
Mrs. Alford was an active worker in the Women's Relief corps as long as she was able. She was also a member of the Eastern Star (last portion is unreadable)."
We have a copy of the above obituary, printed in the Greensburg, Kiowa County, Kansas newspaper, Thursday, October 2, 1930.
