Obituary

"Rachel A. Carrothers was born at Boyington, Tazewell Co. Ill. Nov. 1 1910(sic-this is her death date), aged 54 years 11 months and 20 days. She was united in marriage to John M. Manley July 28, 1877. To this union were born twelve children, seven of whom survive her, Milton, Charley E, Raymond E, Mrs. Essie E Mathias, Robert F, Mrs. Ettie A. Renfro, and Enoch O Manley. She also leaves to mourn her departure a husband, father, one brother five sisters and four grandchildren. Four girls and one boy preceded her to (unreadable) land in infancy.

She united with the M.E. church in San Jose, Ill. when about sixteen years of age, but later united by letter with the Methodist church of Moweaqua and remained a member until her death. About three years ago she with her husband and family moved to Patoka where she has since resided. Those who knew her speak of her as one who, under all circumstances seemed born to inspire the love and respect of all who were so fortunate as to be acquainted with her. No one was more willing to aid the suffering, cheer the despondent, sustain the weak and to throw over the farilties of our race the mantle of christian charity."
We have a copy of this obituary dated Nov. 9, 1910, but don't know in which paper it appeared.
