Oscar Fitch, father of Dr. O.P. Fitch and one of our best known citizens, passed away last Sunday after a steady decline in health from asthma and heart trouble, from which he had long been a sufferer.
Mr. Fitch was a native of New York and had reached the age of 79 years. He was a veteran of the civil war besides having served in the Indian wars in Arizona, and patriotism and love of the flag were the strongest attributes of his character; and this love of country he has never failed to instill in others, both as Commander of the local Post, G.A. R., and in his private life, particularly in the young, whom he was often called to address in the schools and on public occasions. Mr. Fitch "did with his might what his hands found to do," and whether as secretary of the chamber of commerce, inheritance tax appraiser, or as member and worker in the Presbyterian church, he was always equally devoted to the task that had been assigned him.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Mary Fitch, and his son, Dr. O.P. Fitch, he leaves a granddaughter, Miss Dorothy Fitch who came from San Jose where she is attending the State Normal, to pay the last tribute of respect.
The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon from the Presbyterian church, with services by the pastor and interment was in Union cemetery where as the loyal veteran and citizen was laid to rest, the impressive Flag service of the Ladies of the Grand Army was given by Mrs. Wallace C. Brown, Past National President; and following this, Mrs. S.H. Rantz and A.S. Fox sang "When the roll is called up yonder I'll be there."
Among the many floral offerings was a tribute from the Placerville grammar school, in appreciation of the thoughtfulness of Mr. Fitch who recently presented the school with an American Flag."
