..."About 1847 services began to be held at the home of John Scales in the vicinity of where the Pleasant Grove Church now stands, a small log building being erected about 1/2 mile south of the present church site. In the early 50's a class was organized consisting of Thomas Patterson and wife, John Hotz and wife, John Wills and wife, William M. Metham and wife, Mordeci Yarnell and wife, Abraham Farce, Elisha Howard and wife and others. Thomas Patterson being first class leader. William Getz who soon settled there, became an active factor in securing the erection of a house of worship which was begun in 1857 but not completed 'till 1860. This church took the name of Pleasant Grove and became a part of Loudon City circuit with Rev. R.G. Potner as its first pastor and has maintained career to the present time.
John W. Hotz Sr. was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 44 years and has filled the place of steward and leader ever since joining the church. The first year he came to the county he helped build the Methodist Episcopal church and to help wear it out, so they built another church on the same sight in 1881."
