Letter from Anna Carrothers to Mary A. Alford

Woodsfield, Monroe Co Ohio
Feb. 22nd 1891

Mrs. Mary A. Alford:

Dear Cousin:

"You requested me to give you a history of the Carrothers family. I shall as far as I know. Our grandfather was born in Ireland, this I learned from old papers which cannot be mistaken. In the year 1774, George Carrothers, with his wife Isabella and little infant James (our Grandfather) embarked on board the Mary, bound to Philadelphia where they arrived the same year. Soon after their arrival Isabella (our great Grandmother) died, leaving her husband and the little infant James alone in a strange land. George Carrothers took little James and went to Washington County, Pennsylvania. George Carrothers left an only brother in Tyrone County Ireland, his name was James, and he was anxious to come to this country but had not the money. I have an old letter from him written in 1800 addressed to his brother George Carrothers. Our Great Grandfather did not remain alone very long for he soon married his second wife and lived in Washington County, Penn. After some time his second wife died also, leaving some children then he married again and she too died, last the old gentleman married his fourth wife she survived him; Several of George Carrother's grandchildren are living in Richland Co. Ohio and are wealthy they are Cousins to our fathers. James Carrothers grew up to be a careful farmer and carpenter and at the age of thirty married Susanna Dye daughter of Enoch Dye of Washington Co. Penn. They lived there until seven daughters were born two died while young and were burried(sic) there one's name was Isabella for our Great Grandmother. In about the year 1814, our Grandfather entered a tract of land in Monroe Co. O. one mile west of Woodsfield a part of which we live on and on which you were born. Mother, Abbie and I live at the old home. Mother's health has been poor all winter she is trouble with heart disease she is in her seventy fifth year. My sister Mary P. Yoho has four children their names are Mary Emma Yoho, Anna E. Yoho, Carrothers Yoho, and Abbie F. Yoho. Her husband is Representative of our County and is now at Columbus O. Susan has been sick this winter but is better at present.

Please write to me and give me all the news about your Father's family."

Your Cousin,
Anna Carrothers
